שאלה:

Dear Rabbi

You are working in England as a UROLOGY RESIDENT -on call on Shabbat

I young goy comes in with a suspected torsion of his testicle.

The treatment of this is accepted as being:

He will need a general anaesthetic – the testicle suspected of being twisted is then explores – and either removed or untwisted and left in. It is then general practice to then fix (suture the testicle) the good testicle to prevent it from twisting in the future.

Now this is obviously going to be a big HALACHIK problem:

Doing issur de’oreita (stitching and drawing blood) for a non life threatening condition

Doing the same issur to prevent a similar problem happening in the future

Is it permitted?

תשובה:

A torsion of a testicle is life threatening if untreated because of the possibility of gangrene and septicemia. Since you are on call you have to operate. Your questions are very valid -which is why you must try and avoid being on call on Shabbat and Yom Tov by exchanging with a non-Jewish even if you have to do more than one day for every Shabbat that he does for you.
